Hello,
My husband and I have recently purchased a property in Victoria. Australia. Along with the contents of the farm was a 1951 TO 30 Massey Ferguson Tractor. The back tyre is beginning to go down and water is leaking from the valve. Could anyone advise me on how to fix this? I must say at this point that I have no knowledge of tractor repair or maintenance whatsoever, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Lorraine

Lorraine, Most of the time, rear wheels are filled to provide ballast. Water and antifreeze/coolant are added now instead of calcium, sodium compounds to prevent rusting of the rim. I am a tractor mechanic, and was impressed by your candor. There are certain things you can do to prevent the water leakage. If you are interested in more info. please E-mail me back. I deal with TO 30s all of the time. And even have spare and aftermarket parts. Mark

Welcome to Fergie ownership!

Just visiting from the Harry Ferguson board.

You should be able to get a new valve insert from any agricultural tyre merchant. First remove the old valve by moving the tyre so that the valve is at the highest point possible - and then insert two thin 'prongs' of stiff wire either side of the valve button (ie inside the valve 'pipe' that you can see), and unscrew the valve.

There is a valve removal tool you can buy to do this - or borrow one from said tyre merchant.

Take the valve insert to the merchant and get another one. Replacement is the reverse of removal, as they say.

The fluid ballast was added to your tyres to increase weight, and reduce wheel slip when doing 'heavy' work, such as ploughing.

You may be lucky with the existing valve if you (a) push the valve in to flush out any dirt, and then (b) reinflate the tyre with a footpump, or similar.

If any of the above looks like hard work, then you could always ask said tyre merchant to swing by when next in the area - but will cost $$ for a home visit.

Good luck.

Gooday James,
Thank you so much for replying. I was very pleased to read your response. I had some horrible visions of trying to force water back into the tyre! You've made it sound quite simple so we'll give it a go. Thanks again.

you might have to call a tire repairman yet. is the fluid coming out of the stem or around the stem? I work for a repair shop years ago and many customers would come in with leaking tires. "It's just leaking around the stem" I most generaly found a nail or otherwise hole in the tube when I got it apart.
