off the land, last seen on the massey harris board of ytmag posting on a jd38 engine question. any info is welcome. now than all sillyness aside, i read your post below off the land, and i agree that buying old iron and repairs are costly. but i have only the one MH here the rest are lesser reds. i happen to have been more af a farmall man before finding this massey. now as for me saying that i could not afford a manaul well i guess that i was wrong as i bought one the other day, but have not gotten it yet. the condition of this 44 is poor i would say, the rear main seal leaks it dont run the best the manifold needs replacing. and i think that it could use an OH badly.it is a 52.

Yes, I get serious on these Massey-Harris tractors
There is a mountain of confusion, concerning them.
I believe the Standards are best as parts donors,
for Row Crop MH's. These are the true Classics. The '52-'53 44's were the '40K series', the last user of the H260. However, until about 42,8XX,not
all the puzzle came together; using the 33/Special
'big' throttle, simpler rear main seal, heavier cast
pedestal, diverter on the hydraulics, dual color rear Guide lamp. If you 44 is in 'poor' shape,
you may be tossing away money. A Special S/N 55113
& up, is about the strongest MH you will find. You
are in contact with Brad, he's always finding MH
tractors, one state away. Once you see the brake
diagrams, check prices, you may begin looking for
a "bullet proof" Special,w/live clutch. Brad sold one, two years ago.His loss, but there are about
11,000 of them, around. I'd buy one today, they
don't wearout. Cut a few clunkers loose? The
correct red is waiting for you. Good luck!

well i let a few of them specials go already, one guy offered me a frozen one, and there was a local 44 special. cant remeber what the first one was, but the second one was a row crop, did not have the hitch all, but it had the live clutch, the foot clutch was froze up. i let her slip away for a meere $625.now what do you know abought the 55 and the 555, i am in want of the 555 but that will be after i get my 444

When your looking for Specials, you need that 3/8"
rachet in your pocket. Remove the transmission gear oil check plug, by the brake pedal rails, put
you small finger in there, can you touch oil? No,
try using wire, a straw, how low? Axle/brake seals
oozing oil for decades, make for grinding steel
gears, even this strong. They get pitted, under
heavy load chip, or snap a tooth. Wrong tractor.
Certainly POWER in 55/555, but always unfinished
in features:no RC,no 5 or 10 speed,no live power,
no disc brakes,no 3 point. Mostly pulling 4/5
bottom plows, they got'tired',need pricey repairs
Save your 555 dollars, get an 1800D,series B or C
These meadow green Olivers,in RC, 18.4x34 tires,
had the bugs out by '62, had all the features. A
runner, hard worker, like the 'ol Special, you
need to find. Don't jump an 1800, with 20,000hrs,
your plan of no repair budget means no field work.
What's the inventory of non-MH in the yard?

i run two fine farmall H's, i have rebuilt both engines on them with in a year of right now. both run and drive like tops. the fifth gear in both are themain problems that i have, the one jumps out and the other jams in. they are very dependable and hard working tractors. as for no repair budget, i always have the money for spring three cutings and harvest time. i dont run the newest best equipment i run what works best for me, the massey 44 is a prodect that will take time, i dont plan on destoying this standard just to make a rowcrop fell better. i am more than willing to pt the money and time into the work on this tractor. the crank will be stroke at no cost so that is a realy big help. i do all my own work that is another big help, and when it comes to handing out money for parts i am frugle. i have a float comeing from NC a full hydraulic system from OH. i did not know you a oliver man, you sure had me fooled. btw what ever happend to the common grounds site?

Both of them have problems in fifth? Lucky you,how
often do you use fifth? IF stock, 22 HP. For OHV
engine tractor, one 33RC would offer more for less
outlay. After operating a RC and Standard, you get
the message clearly, the RC was the gift from
Heaven. The fallback to Oliver came, after 1957,
once MHF stopped building real tractors. By 1960,
you could purchase an 1800, this integrated well
with 44's, 33's,etc, all working tractors. Now,
it's lost territory, a D4 CAT may be safe, they were always real. Tht 'cg' Board became a soap opera, received warnings, got canned. Good luck
with Brad's diagrams.
