Massy Harris 44S Basic question

I just inherited a 1947 MH 44S and no nothing about tractors. Tried starting it (PUSHING A BUTTON) and it turns over fine - have gas to the carb - but NO SPARK (took plug out, ground it, turned engine over - no spark on Plug or Coil wire. This is with a brand new battery.

My Question is: Is there another switch or some trick you have to do when you start this? A key? another button to push besides the starter button? I was told it was running a week earlier.

Second question: How do you turn it off? (See I said pretty basic questions)

Thanks for your help.

I figured it out. There was a pull switch labeled "LIGHTS" I pulled this out (two stage for the lights) and VAROOOOM - started right up. Talk about the obvious. Apparently the old switch had died and was rewired to the lights (which are broken). I hadn't considered it 'cause it said "LIGHTS." Boy you gotta "think outside of the barn". Thanks for your help - my questions are just starting - as I have many.

Find your distributor and there should be a small, thin wire attatched to the side of it. Go back from the distributor along this wire and you'll come to one side terminal on the coil. Go to the other terminal and trace back along the wire that is attatched there. That wire should eventually end up at some sort of a switch, maybe a keyed switch or a toggle switch or some type of switch, probably on the dash. Check to see that there is voltage coming into the other terminal on that switch, and then check to see if that switch is working. Obviously, that switch supplies power to the ignition system. Good luck.

Not sure about your 44, but most have a key to trun the ignition on with and the button only actuates the starter. On my 101 the key is on the dash below and to the right of the starter button. If your doesnt have a key I would look for a switch someplace since it would be neccesary to shut the tractor off
