I need help. I have a Fergerson TEA-20 and it keeps burning up ignition coils. About 4 in the past year. It also seems to have a slow leak in the electrical system, such as a short. So normally I have to disconnect the battery. But with coils at $40.00 its getting expensive just for my toy. The ignition coils I am buying are 12 volt with an internal resistor. What am I doing wrong. Is there something I should check? HELP!

Just passing thro from the H. Ferguson forum - try checking your voltage regulator - if you know of someone who has one identical to yours (and which works), swap 'em over and see if you still get the problem. They can cause slow leaks (dreadful things, regulators).

Other thing you could check is to see if you have the coil wired up the right way round - one post should be labelled + or ign or batt (running on memory) and that post should be connected to the ignition switch, with the other post going to the points. I don't know if it does make any difference electrolytically, but it might.

Also check to see if your points are getting badly pitted, if so, change the condenser, that may also help.

I have a TEA wiring diagram which I can email you if you need it - that way you can check the wiring thoroughly - put a message on the H. Ferguson board, with your email addy in spam un-friendly format and I will send the diagram.
