Two questions regarding my Pacer:
1) I just changed the hydraulic pump (located on the front right hand side) with the governor. The pump runs off the back side of a gear and the governor off the front. There was some oil in the housing where the pump and governor run. Does this area get oil from the base or am I to be checking this and topping it up with oil? I don't mean the hydraulic oil - but the oil where the drive gear runs.
2) there's a cannister on top of the engine just behind the breather. It is connected to the oil pan by two small lines and has oil in it. Assume it's some type of oil filter. How do I maintain or check this? Do I have to do anything with it when I change the oil? Should there be a filter in it?
Thanks in advance for the help and I will get the manuals in due course.

I have a 1984 chevy blazer S10, and it was having carbuetor problems , so i thought, but now when i try to drive it there isnt that much power when i push on the gas and it backfires, and sometime when i put it in to reverse or drive it dies. oh and its also an automatic. What do you think could be the Problem?

That area where the hydraulic pump and governor attatch (sort of back to back) gets it's lubrication via a splash system out of the engine crankcase so yes, there should be oil in there, or at least the remnants of oil once the engine is shut off and those two units are removed. And the canister you mentioned is in fact a canister for a cartridge type oil filter that is inside. The canister might have a drain plug on the bottom of it but if not, then the oil has to be drawn out (use your wife's turkey baster) after the lid (and filter cartridge) is removed. Take note of the order of washers, springs, etc. inside that canister when you dismantle everything. Oil under pressure comes in the bottom fitting on that canister and the return line comes out the side. I think the Fram number for that filter is a C-4 but other makes have crossover numbers that will give you the same thing. By the way, that is a Continental flathead engine in there, the same engine in a lot of agricultural applications and industrial stuff as well like Lincoln welders, etc. Email me if you like, I've removed the "hide" from the email link on this post.
