Symptoms: Tractor wont start and stay running for any length of time.

First test: My tractor runs for a while after jump-starting it and then it dies. My first guess was the battery was bad, however it was just bought April of this year. I had it tested and sure enough bad. I bought a new battery and couldnt get the tractor to turn over without jumping it and tapping on the starter. Once the tractor was running I pulled the positive cable and the tractor immediately died. I was told this would test to see if the generator was bad.

There seems to be a lot of variables here to me. Is the starter, generator, key switch, or battery bad? Can the generator be replaced with an alternator? Any suggestions on testing or what to test first? Thanks Jake
