Loud knocking when pto under load ?

Here's a stumper, my tractor makes a loud knocking when the PTO is under load and my sickle mower is lifted above say 30 degrees. The noise is coming from the clutch housing area. A friend suggested that there may be a broken PTO drive gear tooth. I have the tractor split and everything looks good. My tractor is the F-40 dual clutch, (same tractor as MF or MH 50.) I've also checked the pins that hold the hydrolic pump. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Gary in Idaho

The sound you hear is the slack in the drive train of the PTO. U-joints do not transmit power at a constant velocity. They speed up and slow down with every revolution. The solution is to run the PTO shaft as straight as possible. This is the reason for CV (constant velocity) joints on cars. They are too expensive to use on farm machinery. Try backing off on the throttle when you raise the mower, also disengage the PTO if you have to travel with the mower raised. I have mowed hundreds of acres with a mounted mower on an 8N and a MF135 with the same noise. Ed

Thanks Ed,

I appreciate the input. I wasn't really wanting to put the tractor back together until I had some kind of a solution. Had a MF35 that didn't make the noise under the same circumstances but is sounds like the F40 has more slack in it's systym. In event, she's going back together and back to work.

Thanks again, to you and everyone who responded.

I just got my MH50 apart to find the same sound and the high/low was jumping out of gear. all that I found was that the end of the top shaft in the tranny had the end brock off were it goes into the drive shaft (there is a little bearing there just after the high/low is. there was a bearing in the back of the cluch(I dont know what it is called) that was bad and that is the only thing I could find that might make the knocking of the pto.

Is it the PTO or could it be the hydraulic pump. These knock when set to constant pumping ie you have lifted it to high and set the lever at constant pumping.

One of the hardest things to do, is to pin-point the origin of noises. While it may very well be in the pto driveline of the tractor, it is quite possible that the noise is originating from the mower. U-joint bind. When they are at odd angles, they will make noise. They will also put the pto in a strain, putting them under a load. Does the noise still occur when the mower is un-hooked? My old MF50 makes that very same noise, when I hook up a my 6' tiller, but the bush hog or the haybine don't cause the noise. The Massey-Ferguson mechanic tells me that my Knocking is coming from the pump pins. I'm not convinced.
