Any suggustions on removing the head. I have the bolts out and have lifted up while tapping the sides but it won't budge. I have not removed the water pump, can that be the problem? The water pump does not appear to be attached to the head though.

I've taken a few of those off the little Continental flatheads and I've yet to see one come off easy. First rule is to have patience and not be in a rush. Get yourself a propane torch and heat the studs and use a good quality penetrating oil which will eventually work it's way down between the stud and the head. Then get a good brass hammer and a brass punch. Use the hammer to tap the studs gently and also the head. If you want to get the edge of the brass punch along the lower side edge of the head then tap upwards it's pretty safe. keep repeating the sequence, heat, tapping, oil, more tapping, heat. Eventually some of them will crack loose. Eventually one end or side will come loose before the other. Work the opposite side then and stay away from the loose one. When you do get it off, get some emery cloth and work on those stud surfaces before reassembly, and paint a thin coat of coppercoat anti-seize compound on the sides of the studs and cylinder head holes before putting everything back together. One last reminder to be patient, probably the best advice I can pass along to you. Good luck.

the water pump doesnt need to come off. sometimes the head gasket sticks really bad. on my 44 i had to pry up fairly hard then the gasket let go. be careful not to damage the head or the block mating surfaces.
