I am looking for some information about a MH 33 gas/row crop tractor w/ a hand clutch. 1953 Serial number (G1RF 3XXX) does not indicate hand clutch (live PTO) info. Does anyone have any info to share? Am trying to find out how many were issued w/ a hand clutch (live PTO). Was this a common issue? Any and all info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I own a 33 1953, mine does'nt have live pto hand clutch, also the other 33 i seen did'nt have it either. I was told that you can put one in off of a 44.Buy one at a salvage yard, install it. There is a place on your deck or floor plate,a slote for it. Mine as the slote in it. There's plate on the side of your transmission or gear box for the live clutch.

Off The Land: Thank you for the prompt and precise reply. My father purchased this33 in 1953 to use on his PTO baler - worked very well - I was priveleged to run this combo many hours while growing up on the farm. One can always hope a special experience might involve a tractor with special features or be a unique model. The 33 still runs well and would likely handle a job of hay baling also. He also had a 44 MH l950 model: GR (gas rowcrop) 192XX. It is also in running order. Is there any info as to number made by using serial numbers? As you are aware I am not very well versed in the intricacies of tractor mfg', etc. A special thanks for sharing your wealth of information. To what can I attribute your wealth or source of information? Thank-you!

Common confusion is the hand clutch, as some of
the 'standards' actually had a hand clutch on the
left. G1RF means gas, regular altitude, row crop,
foot clutch. The live 'over-ride' PTO hand clutch
was an option on 44's, by '50. S/N's do not give
live power or WFE info. The live clutch was only
a temporary idea, until MH R & D had independent
PTO, like Oliver, in the future models,Triple 3,4.
The Ferguson merger brought chaos to MHF,funding
slashed for MH design,PTO change limited to lower
shaft height. 33's & Specials had about 50% live
clutch, less in Triples, as it had become dated,
sales lost. Then MHF announced phaseout of MH, in
May,1957. The long downward spiral of MF began, a
company manufacturing nothing unique.

More numbers? No one really knows, as MH was the out-sourcer supreme. Tractors reached Australia, Pakistan, Africa; who accounted for them? Were
they assembled in Racine, seems unlikely. North
American 'classic' 44's, run totals from 84K to
110K. Then factor in the Specials, Triple 4's...
Ask ten MH Guys-in-the-know, how many? Get ten
numbers. Best advice: Restore your Dad's 33, it's
a project, but driving a MH classic, restored, is
a pleasant experience, enjoying red quality.
