The hydraulics on my massey 1155 quit and I would appreciate any advice on a simple test procedure to determine if the problem is the radial pump or the charge pump. If the problem is the charge pump, do you have to split the tractor in half to replace the pump??

Check all filters first. Those tractors had problems with the final drive gears chewing up and clogging the filters with filings. Friend of mine had this problem and he found out that it was common with these tractors at around 3000 hrs.
Our 1155 burnt 14 yrs ago at 2700 hrs so we never had that problem.

The charging pump is located under the transmission lid, when you remove the lid the pump comes with it.They are a little pricey to replace.Your problem may be with the hydraulic unloading valve that does not let the tractor build up pressure until the engine starts. The older 1100series tractors had a manual unloading valve on the foot plate.

Your Question:

Did they quit raising completly, or just won't hold? Quit raising

Did they quit abruptly, or over a period of time?
They quit raising abruptly.

Another person responded that he felt like it was probably the control valve that was stuck. He said he had to do this many time with the 1100 series tractor.

Thanks for your quick reply.

Get the service manual first, and do pressure check with gauge at test ports indicated. Check condition and quantity of oil. Strainers clean? Any metal or other debris? I can't remember the last time I saw the pumps out of a 1100 series Massey, but I am almost certain the differential housing has to be seperated from the transmission to access the pumps. Fun with a cab.
The gal in the message below sounds like she might have a good 1155 for a builder, if you have a good motor. Just a thought. Tom S.

I believe the charging pump can be accessed via the access plate below the floorboard just forward of or under the seat. This is the way my 1100 is I believe. I believe when you pull the access plate the charging pump is mounted to it. I'll look at my I&T manual.

Hope this helps.
