I have a 1951 Massey Harris Pony with a Marvel Schebler Carb. After running the engine for several hours, I noticed that the plugs and exhaust are black. It appears to me that the fuel mixture may be rich. I am unsure how to adjust the fuel mixture since I am unfamiliar with this carb. ANy suggestions

I dont know which model MS carb you have ,theres a small brass tag on it with the model number. If you have a tsx series carb you first have to set idle mix. screw, turn in till its lightly seated the back out 1 turn.Same for the mix.or power adjusting needle as it sometimes called. then start tractor and warm up to temp. then with choke completly open adjust idle screw until engine runs smoothly staying on the rich side of the adjustment...
mixture or (power ) adjustment engine running at governed speed under load turn needle clockwise until engine begins to lose power then back out until picks up power and runs smoothly...A richer mixture maybe needed to improve acceleration. This is as stated in rebuild kit. More often than not the Idle mix. screw is the culprit. Two other checks on the choke butter fly you have a small spring it could be missing allowing the flap into open postion and a partial updraft choke will occur that you cannot see..make sure the spring is there. also check air filter it may need cleaning. My neighbor's pony has a tsx but on the masseys you never know.....if you have a different model post back and I'll look for my carb. book..
hope this helps...
