Generator testing

I was thinking about an alternator, then decided to stick with the generator, on my old MF 50. I want to test the generator. I am having "battery trouble" and suspect the generator. (currently, my amp meter is not working correctly) Can I check voltage by using a multi-meter? If I hook the leads to the 2 post's on top of the generator, will it give me the out-put voltage? If so I'm not getting anything, and am running off of the battery. I am going to replace the amp meter as soon as possible, but have to use the tractor today. I don't want to kill a new battery. I have access to several generators, on junkers. (I got lucky yesterday, and found 2 almost intact 50's in the salvage yard near home. One has a cracked engine block, and the other has a destroyed tranny. bad sheet metal on both, but still a find)

Your close, but no cigar. You want to measure the voltage from the big terminal (A) on the generator to ground. If nothing there, try grounding the small terminal with it running and your meter on the big terminal. If still nothing you have generator problems, if this makes it charge, you have regulator or wiring problems.

Thanks for the info. I've got a bad Generator. But talk about luck! I found not one, but two old 50's, being parted out, over the week-end. One has a cracked engine block, but has MANY good parts. The other has been picked on pretty good, already, but has a complete engine. I managed to get a working generator, for $40. I am going to have the original re-built, and put it back to work, saving the salvaged one for a spare. The better of the two "junkers" is for sale. ($400) I'm going after it today. It has spin-out rear wheels, and rubber that is about 90%. The intake/exhaust, and carb are gone. So is the hood, and nose sheet metal, but is still worth the cost. It has a good tachometer, and a better steering wheel, than mine. Can't wait to get it home. Once again, thanks for the reply on the generator testing. John Fugit
