I have been looking for a sickle mower for my 8n, and came across a massey ferguson 3 pt belt driven. It looks to be in good condition. It is missing the tractor end of the pto shaft. The sickle bar is in great shape. I could not get the model number, but the ser # is 238036329. He wants $350.00 for it, may take less. Is this a good machine, can you get parts, is the price fair? I have never had a sickle mower that had no pitman stick, it looks like it would mow in all positions. Can you get an instruction manual for it? Thanks for any help.

Does anyone know where I can buy the double rock guards for a MF Model 41 sickle mower and new knives?

How would you know if it is broken? The sickle moves back and forth when the belt is rotated. I did not rotate the pto though. I don't think this guy has ever used it. He bought it at an auction I think.

Ken

$350 is a fair price for a complete mower but with the shaft missing it's worth at least $100 less. As far as the belt drive goes, that is the best part of the mower and you will never go back to the old style again if you should chose to buy it.

Someone told me that they do not do well in heavy grass, because of a short stroke, any comment on that?

The Dynabalance mower does very well in heavy grass, but only if sharp smooth, non-serated sickle sections are used. Make sure the wear plates, shims, and hold-downs are properly adjusted to keep the sickle aligned with the ledger plates in the rock guards. The sickle sections must lie flat on the ledger plates to give a clean scissors-like shearing action. You may need to straighten the shank of any rock guards that may be bent. Use a lower gear than you would for mowing alfalfa. It also helps to have a little more tension on the belt drive, as any stalling of the sickle will immediately clog the bar.

Ken

Ours has mowed everything from heavy grass to alfalfa with no problems. It does have the steel frame though.

If its a side mount it is a 71, if a rear mounted and steel fabricated housing it will be a 41, if a rear mounted and cast iron housing it will be a 30 or 31. Six, seven, or eight feet bars. Some parts are simply not available from a dealer, for instance a lot of the larger bearings are obsoleted and you will have to subsitute a thinner bearing. But on the other hand a good deal of the parts that wear and break can be obtained from the MF dealer. Some of these parts on the above mentioned mowers will interchange. Owners manuals and parts manuals are both available on e-bay, even your dealer can get a new operators manual for less than 10 dollars. Good luck if you buy; you will own a good cycle mower.

It is a rear mount, and is steel, so might be a 41. It looks like it may need a new belt, and one of the idler pulleys is froze up.

You probably can operate with one of idler pulleys removed. you also can grind out the rivits and replace them with #10-32 or #10-24 bolts after you renew the bearing . can save a few bucks this way. by the way, those pulleys are available from MF dealer.
