I have a 1957 Massey-Ferguson 50, that I'm restoring to it's former glory. I'll use it as much as I can. I don't believe in letting things set idle. We farm a bit, and this will be a utility tractor, and will see a good bit of time in the hay fields. I am going to completely re-wire it, as the wiring is in poor shape. The old generator is going to need rebuilding. I was wondering about saving the generator for the future, and replacing it with an alternator for the time being. Has anyone done such a converstion? What would i need to do? I would like to use an alternator that is readily available, and reasonably priced. Since the old tractor has a simple electrical system, and few accesories, it wouldn't require a high ampreage alt. It is 12 volt, gas, and my fathers first new tractor. I don't want to "butcher" anything, but will leave it were I can put things back to original someday. Any advice? This tractor was delivered to my father, on the day that I was born.

John, There are about a half-dozen articles regarding gen. to alternator conversions listed in the "RESEARCH& INFO" section of this website. I recently did a 1960 Ford 2000 conversion and used the following website: Link . EVERYTHING went smoothly and Brian's instructions and diagrams were perfectly clear. GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN, JIM

John, I purchased a "One wire" alternator from O'Reilly Auto Parts for about $65 USD. I am sure a NAPA dealer would carry them also. C. T.

I did a similar conversion with a MF135. Brackets need to be fabricated - some scrap iron and arc welder can do that. The belt will need to be longer. I used a Lucas alternator with a built in regulator to make it easier. Need 2 wires - power out and - different to a generator power in. The power in needs to be disconnected when the engine is not running so a new ignition switch is needed - they are not expensive see bareco australia and will replace the existing switch. - also need some type of indicator to show power is on/off. I solder all terminals and use a small piece of heat shrink plastic to create a professional looking job.
