I agree with Fred an 85 gas is a pretty good tractor. (diesels are another story) Somewhere around 8,563 85 gas tractors were built. HP ratings are 61 pto and 51 drawbar. Average price might be around $3500.

The MF 85 gas is a excellent running tractor. My dad bought one new , still farm with it today. The 85 first came with a 223 engine, later the 242 gas engine, the 85 diesel has a 277 engine. I have two 85's, one super 90 diesel, 97 diesel. When taken care of any tractor will run forever. My 85's rarely need to go to the shop. There is a picture of my 90 in tractor photos. I also sell new and used parts for Massey Harris and MF. Email me for parts or info.I have about 40 Massey tractors.

Unless Uncle Joe left it to your friend, better to
pass on 'buying' an 85.The production was brief, the 85/88 not durable. Originally, don't laugh,
this was the replacement for the MH 444, after MF
disgarded the cast U-frame. The 277 engine was in
early models, front end attached to the block, you
hugged the transmission case, a drop axle model
was offered for marginal pulling performance. The
85 was a regular at repair garages, split for a
ripped gear, etc. English Perkins engines appeared
once MF purchased that company. A rare 90 was to
replace the 85,but quick changes lead to Super 90.
Steven, an old Special or Triple 4, in row crop, will bury any 85. You know those 44's...

I would like more information on this "rare" 90 tractor. I don't believe there was ever such a thing other than Super 90's.

It made it as far as proto-types, if not an actual
production run. A guy in Wisconsin had a 90, not
a super 90. Nothing I personally compared specs
against the super 90, but people near Racine were
known to follow MHF through it's details. The
owner is deceased, the tractor probably repainted
as a super 90, by now. Another tractor sitting in
someone's shed.
