Haven't been around Massey Ferguson tractors all that much other than an 1100. Found an ad with a 97 for sale. I think that they were almost the same thing as a Minneapolis Moline G only with different sheetmetal. I was wondering, would one that is in workable condition be worth $1800? Did they have any 3 point, dual hydrolics, or power steering? This tractor is posted in the photo ads, and looks to be a nice tractor. And one more thing, if it is a diesel, was the motor a good one, or what kind of diesel motor did they have? Thanks for the help!!

The old 1100, I thought was a good tractor. Been abou 8 years, and I still wouldn't mind owning another. The reason we sold it was because it had a gas motor and the intake on the manifold collasped and the hydrolics were getting a little weak. I liked how she pulled though! Just also looked in the paper and found a 1105, with a cab for only $2200. Might consider on this one, because it has the perkins in it. Thanks for the info!!!

The MF97 was built by Moline. It has the 504 engine; with care it will run for ever and crank out the one hundred horse it claimed. However the tractor basically has the old U rearend and finals, which were built for about forty horse. If you chain that beast to a one hundred horsepower tree stump you will find out, that, it is indeed, a forty horse rear end. Even with the light five speed transmission and finals I would love to have one.

That is a bunch of BS. MM has one of the strongest rearends out there. If you keep the weight under 15,000 lbs, you will never have any problems. Go to a MM junkyard. You will see countless complete MM rearends. They don't break and no one is looking for replacement parts.

I saw the photo ad, but I thought it had a contentail engine, which I believe would be gas. The Contential gas engine is a good engine and lots of them around. The diesel in the Massey Ferguson generally is a Perkins which is a good engine. Perkins also made a gas engine that was in the MF for a while which you can get different opinions on it. I am no expert though.

It is a MM 504 cubic inch diesel engine. I have a 97 diesel. It is the same as MM 705. Good 100 hp tractor. It was available in LP or diesel. Four speed, hand clutch, hyd, power steering. The 95 was same as MM GV1. The 97 was made by MM.

So what did you think to the 1100?

Roy, I believe your question has significant validity.
We're here with few facts. After 2 or 3 decades
on an IH, is he too comfortable for any change?
The MM, being an 'ol brute, may cause Mr. IH to
curse his "bargain" and the Y.T. tractor board. Operating an 1100 for a day or two? Owned it two years, traded for a clean 966? There are tractors
out there that I would not want to own/operate.
If he liked the 1100, perhaps driving the 97 may
help make the decision.
