I have a MF 85 with a cracked piston. I have been told by two different tractor minded people that if I replace one piston, I should replace all four. MF wants $1300.00 for a set of four. Is this true? or if one will do, are there any after market or used pistons out there anywhere?

P.S. On top of this my head may be cracked. I dont want to be putting bad money after bad!

Would not fool with "used" or after market piston in your case. Change the piston with an EXACT new replacement to keep things in balance. Also, sounds like you need to send the head to a machine shop and let them flux it for cracks.

there is no reason you can not change just piston we do it all the time in stock cars just make sure they are the same in size and weight and the rings are in the sane spot. our engines are balanced so we do weight thing.

This fellow knows what he is saying. As long as the pistons are the same SIZE, LOOK the same, and WEIGH the same, on a very good scale, to the GRAM, replacing one will not bother you.

My cousin had an 85D utility. I thought it was one of the nicest tractors ever made.

I agree with Marlowe. Provide you are swapping like for like and nothing is excessively worn there should be no problem.
