Help! I have a flathead Continental, Block casting # F400A - 618 (or maybe 613). Head Casting # 4E23. Governor located front lower right in attached housing. Has a gasket set part # F4U01007 with it.No data tag on engine. Any Ideas what it is or how much more it'll take to ID this thing? I could remove the oil pan and measure the cyl/stroke, but as a last resort. Any help greatly appreciated- tell me what to look for! Thanks.

That casting number was the same I think for all of the 4 cylinder flathead sizes (which were 124, 140, and 162 cubic inches). On the left side of the engine block there is a place for a tin plate (rectangular) but it is probably gone, it would've had the size on it. Above the front frost plug just below the cylinder head is another raised part in the casting which has been machined flat and there might be a hand-stamped number into that area showing engine size. If you don't need to take off the head then you should keep it on. Knowing the engine size won't help anything, all parts, etc. are the same (other than the rings and pistons and cylinder bore size).

Thanx Mike- I'll check for more numbers and reply. So if I've got this right, the F400 block is one of the previous displacements you posted, then the only other differences would be compression, cam, carburator and brackets.

That would be about it I'd say, the block is definitely the same one. I bolted down a head from a 140 onto a 124 a few years ago and it worked perfect. And yes, I think there might have been some of the differences you noted and also I think some might have had the governor where others had the factory hydraulic pump (facing the back of the tractor).

Found the #'s, Block stamps: NB 8-83 WT 8377 S/N 132.
On machined spot on head: F401A602. Block casting : F400A613. Head Casting: 4E23. Maybe these mean something to someone in the know.

IS that F401 or F140 at the start of that one number?

Hi Mike, yes, stamped on the machined spot on head: F401A602. Cast on head 4E23 just below firing order 1342. Stamped on machined spot on block NB 8-83 and next line below that WT8377 S/N 132.Cast on block F400A613. I thought it possible that the stamps on block were a rebuilders mark as they don't match the head and they are quite uneven in placement and depth. So far no-one has been able to even say for sure it's a Continental. The gasket set does match up though. Thanks, Jim B.

No doubt it is a Continental, that I'd bet on. Below that cast-in F400 number (lower on the side of the block in that area) should be a symbol which is actually 3 letters intertwined ... a C and an E and an L if I remember correctly. Stands for Continental Engine Limited. That should be there I'm pretty sure.
