a pack rat got in my tractor last winter. didn't chew anything up, but built her nest on top of the engine, and now i can't get her to start. it will hit on 3 or 4 cylinders, then nothing. if i leave it set for an hour or so, and try to start it again, it's the same old thing. put on new switch, coil, and resistor, but when i took the cap off the dist., there's a plate on top that i'm sure i can't get off without tearing it up. any help ???

Maybe you are way ahead of me but that plate if I understand you corectly covers the points. It should come off if it's not rusted tight. your problem may be with the points and or condencer. Just a thought. Cheap fix if that's it. Good luck
