MF 275 Front tires plow instead of turning

Often I find I am not making the turning radius around obstacles. Instead, while watching the box blade or bush hog, I am plowing ahead with the front tires in the soft sand (i.e. pushing a furrow with the tires) instead of making the turn.

I think the problem is insufficient weight in the front end. The tires are free to turn and the steering is good.

I currently operate with the brakes interlocked (they are in need of shoes) so I don't steer by braking.

Any suggestions?

Once you get the lock released and lube it just work it from time to time. This may keep it from freezing up again. Also, visit some of the old Tractor yards the ones with all the rusted hulks of metal in the back field and the new landscaping mini tractors out front. Chances are the new younger owners or sales folks don't even know what is out back or what it is worth. I found some front suitcase weights and rear round wieghts for may MF 290 1983. Had my pick, but took the whole day digging them out (90 degrees) with all the hornets buzzing close by. But for $20 or $30 for 60, 75, 80 pound weights and the mounting brackets to boot. Dealer near my home had none used, wanted a dollar & half per pound plus shipping from a foundary for new non- original ones and shipping from half way across the country.

Plus it is pure entertainment to go through those Tractor grave yards. Also check out auctions they usually sell the weights separate from the tractor, buyers seldom purchase the weights with the tractors.

I had the misfortune of borrowing a 8n ford which did the same thing, the problem was the front tires were out of alignment, the leading edge on the tires needs to be about 1/8 of an inch shorter than the back edge. I agree with the other guy about the differintial lock ,if it is engaged the front will dig in rather than steer ,at least this happens on my 165. Iam kinda new at this farming thing too and I have found that the wannabes are usually the wise guys, most people on this board are very helpful.

I appreciate all of your comments, even those with attitude. I'll get the brakes fixed and use them as intended. The front tires are brand new with excellent ribs, not car tires. I wasn't born into a farming family with its associated tractor sense so I'm learning - sometimes the hard way. I have some research to do regarding the differential lock. I have to admit, I don't exactly know what that term is. I suspect it is the left heal pedal that forces the transmission and both rear tires to act concurrently and yes, it could be locked and not free. Your suggestions regarding manuals - in particular an Operator's Manual - is well founded and I will order one today. There is a lot to learn as I do not use my tractor every day nor do I earn a living with it. It is a complicated tool in an arsenal of tools, some easier to command than others.

Land Owner, I have had the same problem and it was definitely the differential lock. Once I released it, the problem stopped. On my FE35, it is a pedal on the right side towards the rear and it does not release on it's own. Also, what sometimes is perceived as "Attitude" is just straight forward honest comments from folks that are trying to be helpful. I haven't seen very many inconsiderate remarks on this site. Just my 2 cents. C. T.

If the diff. lock does not release on its own, then how is it to be released? I figured it would be internal spring operated to release when not needed (how does it know when that is?). It is intended to stay locked until manually unlocked? Is there a detent or pin that needs to be pulled to release it?

I looked at the right rear foot pedal [diff. lock] this evening without running the tractor. It was definately depressed to the floor and potentially the problem along with not using the brakes. It would not release very easily and I am not sure it has released. I manually pulled up on the footpedal and observed the pin in the differential move outward some 1/4". I don't think this is quite enough. Maybe it is too much if a detent or pin is to be released first.

Searched other diff. lock threads on this board and found one regarding the MF 175 which very adequately described the operation. I am on the right path thanks to the board's help. Some lubrication and working back and forth while free wheeling the right tire should help:). Then clutching, depressing lock, declutching, use of lock in straight away, slight left or right turn, and tap on right brake to release.

Thats what the turning brakes are for. Learn to use them. Only join them when you are on the open road at speed. Also learn to use the diff lock when needed.
This is called operating a tractor. It is not a car.

What kind, and in what shape are your front tires. You need good 3-rib front tires with good, deep tread on them to bite in and allow you to make the turn. Some tightwads use old car tires on front and they do exactly what you have described. Get back to us.

I suggest you fix your brakes and steer with them, it will make things a helluvalot easier for you, and for safety sake as well. I'm sure you can still buy weights here and there, some dealers may have some yet, they used the same 6" mounting plate for many years, from atleast the 1XX series to the 3XX's as a neighbor has a 393 with the same weights as my 165 and 285. Don't expect them to be cheap, but they are also nice to have. Thinking about taking atleast the concrete off my 285 for a while though. Donovan from Wisconsin
