How clean should area inside brake drum be ??

Well, I finally got around to replacing the inner rear axle seals on my MF FE 35. The process was very straightforward but now I need some further advice. I was replacing the seals because I had a leak on the left side after changing the hydraulic fluid in this new-to-me tractor. When I bought it the 3 PH worked fine even though the oil level was low and the leak didn't show. Since I filled the hydraulic chamber the tractor hasn't moved (I've been doing a few other clean up things) and once the leaking started I drained most of the hydraulic fluid back out until I could find time for the seal replacement job.
The brake shoes appear to be dry - no obvious oil saturation - but how can I tell if there has been some oil absorbed by the pads? Also, there appears to be a "film" around all the parts contained inside the brake drum. Does this need to be cleaned up and, if so, what is the best method?? Power wash? Wire brush? Cloth and elbow grease? or ??

Thanks
Bob

Cleaned my brake shoes up with boiling water and soap powder followed by a rub with sandpaper. I also noticed someone suggesting running a blow lamp over them. Mine will lock the wheels no bother so I'm happy enough with that.

You can purchase brake cleaner for this purpose at an auto parts store. Wal-Mart handles this product, also.
