I am looking at an MF285 and have been told they were hard on head gaskets and the hydro pump. Is there any way to tell if a gasket problem exists or if the hydro pump is going out.

When I raise the 3pt hitch, it responds, but is is in a jerkey motion.

Thanks,
Ray

Got 5 Masseys , 2 1085's and a 285 , they are no worse than any other on pumps and gaskets . Big pain is getting at the pumps , like all 200 series , they need a split to get at , lot of work , even without a cab . That jerky lift could be air or could be worse . A good dealer can show you the test points for Hydraulic pressure tests . There are 3 pumps if you,ve got Multipower and remotes . one for the 3 pt lift and a double pump for remotes , MP and IPTO . Add in your power steering pump and you've got 4 , but at least it's easy to get at. I've blown 2 head gaskets in 15 years , not on same tractor , no more than any of the others around here. Those perkins 318's lug like crazy and are a whole lot easier on fuel than most----- --Bill
