I have a 1963 MF 35 with a cont.Z134 motor. I need a fluid change in the transmission and was wondering if other sae 80 fluid is ok to use besides the mineral oil the owners manual calls to use. Thankyou for any help and much appreciation!

Hi Mark. There's a lot of differing opinions on this, but here's what oil experts have told me. Don't use universal TDH, Permatran, or Ford/NH 134D oils because they are too thin. If your hydraulic pump is in real good shape, it will work ok, but the gears won't be as well protected as with 80w90. But if the pump is worn, it will stop working at high temperatures (summer) due to the low vicosity of the oil. If your tractor only sees winter use, the TDH could be ok. The 80w90 gives the gears the proper protection, and will allow a worn hydro pump to still work ok in the heat. Also it must be GL1 oil, not GL5, because the GL5 has extreme pressure additves that will attack bronze/brass parts used in these trannys. I'm not sure what parts they are, but I'm told they're in there. One brand of GL1 80w90 oil is Shell Dentax. You could check Big Dean's web site, he says the same thing.
