If there is a bulge with bolted flanges 2/3 way down the rear axle trumpet casting (near each wheel), then this is a reduction gear and indicates it is a 165 or 185 type transmission, if not its a 135 type. The gear boxes fitted to the MF35 and MF65 were the same except the MF65 had faster input ratio so to reduce torque loadings on the transmission, the reduction hubs were there to reduce the speed back down before the drive gets to the wheels. I would suspect the 148 is the same as the 135 but just fitted with a spacer between gearbox and backend to give it a bit more length, which i presume would improve its 3 point hitch capability with heavier equipment. The ##8 usually signified a long wheel base version of the ##5(about 6 inches).

J.W. I may be wrong but, I think the 148 is basically a 135 but with the transmission from the 165, so it's either 3F 1R with Multi-Power, or 4F 1R standard with a spacer to lengthen the tractor.I don't know for sure but may-be it's the same gearbox in the 135 and the rest, e.g. 165/168, 185/188.
