What exactly do you mean by the governor pipe? Some governors might have had an oil line into the governor housing for lubrication ... that's the only thing I can think of. Can you clarify your post a bit for us?

Yes we belive they are oil lines but the short amount of pipe left has some sort of non return valve on it.Dad can not remember a non return valve no the one he went to look & has not heard back from the owner of it after trying to phone him, nead to know if valve is required or not & what direction of flow is. THANKS Daryl

I have a factory manual here for the 30 (gas) and 30K (low grade fuel) and in the manual it shows that line so it is "factory" original and they call it the "governor oil line". I also see the valve you are talking about (although it is not labelled as such but I assume it is the valve). It appears to be near the upsweep portion of the steel tube that heads to the air filter right? It would only make sense that if it is a one-way valve that it's purpose is to make sure that adequate oil pressure is available before it opens to enable oil to pass through to the governor. Once the oil hits the governor area the pressure is lost since it just returns to the crankshaft area from the area of the timing gears (zero pressure area). So then it would seem that the valve allows oil (under pressure or at least past a certain pressure) to flow TO the governor to increase governor lubrication. If oil pressure is low or not enough to get through the valve, the governor is still getting "splash" lubrication from the timing gears via the crankcase at the front of the engine. My Masseys (same engine) do not have that oil line, however the first one I had (101 Junior) had a governor on it that had an oil line into the governor that somebody added on. The model 30's came later and maybe this was a factory modification to some weakness in the original system. Do you have an original Massey owners/operators manual. If you don't, email me at the above "blue" name link and I'll email you back.
