I installed a 8 volt battery in my massey 102 jr. It worked very well , didn't seem to effect the electrical system. The 8 volt battery is the same size as the old 6 volt battery.

My '50 Pony is 6 Volt Postive Earth. I use a truck battery on it, most available 6 volts haven't got enough grunt especially if you're doing a lot of stop/start work or working under lights.

8 volt battery will work fine, just adjust the voltage regulator to deliver about 8.5 volts output from the generator. Otherwise the 8 volt battery will never charge properly.
