MF65 Dies After a Few Minutes

I have a 1961 Massey Ferguson model 65, gas. The tractor starts without a problem and will idle all day. When I drive it around wihtout a load it will run for about 5 minutes the start to cutout and die. (If it's loaded - using implements - the time is less) After about 10 minutes I can repeat the whole process.

I've changed the coil, cap and rotor. The screen in the sediment bowl is clean as is the bowl itself. The air cleaner has just been cleaned as well. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

T

I just fought this on my 65 this week. Finally eliminated the sediment bowl all together and ran an in line filter instead. Rust will cause this 9 times out of ten on this tractor.

My MF135 has an inverted cone mesh filter above the tap on the fuel tank. You may need to remove the tap to clean it. Check there is no mesh filter above the sediment bowl as the diesels are fitted with these and they are hard to spot. I do not know exactly how the petrol MF65 is set up.

No but my MF65 does the exact same thing. I've seem to be getting plenty of gas flow. I've replaced the cap, rotor, condensor, points, and coil.

It does not restart immmediately, it has to set for a couple of minutes.

If you solve this, please let me know how.

The tank on my 65 is full of rust one thing you can do if you still have the original sediment bowl take and turn the valve all the way shut and then back it out 1 and a quarter turns if it has the tube going up in the tank what that does is allow the tractor to pull gas from and inch or so from the bottom of the tank if you open the valve all the way you will be drawing off the bottom I simply replaced mine it was about 7 dollars I think but I have to shut the valve every time I shut the tractor off or rust hangs up in the float and it will drain gas down through the carb and out the inlet ruining that 15 dollar hose from the carb to the metal pipe going to the air filter I guarnatee this is your problem you have rust somewhere in the loop I have fought it and fought it.

take your gas line loose at the carb. and make sure you have a steady flow for 30 sec. or so. If not you have a restriction in your line, filter or in the tank.i.e. rust blocking flow to the sediemt bowl. If the fuel tank cap fits really tight, you may be drawing a vacuum on the tank and starving for fuel that way.

Does it start back up or do you have to wait to cool off? If you have to wait until it cools, could be a shorted condenser. When it dies, check for spark at the plugs to narrow down between a fuel or electrical problem

Is there a screen in the gas tank? It sounds like fuel flow is restricted and your running out of gas.

Sounds like the condenser to me. I had the same trouble with my F-40 Ferguson. The voltage regulator stuck and fried the battery and several
condensers before I found the problem.
