give me an idea what you think it could be? i have mh 44 and the engine is missing. number 3 is missing but all the spark plugs and disturbor is all brand new. took valve cover off and they looked good to me while they were running very slow. number 4 piston has almost no compress i put my thumb in it and i could feel it, number 3 piston blew my thumb out, couldnt keep my thumb in, so it gotta to be real good compression.. thats all i did, im trying to figure out what is it more likely would be? i just brought it and im using it for back up parts so i wanna get that motor to run good if i can.. any ideas or advices greatly appricate!

Shannon, my local shop ordered a set of springs from a wholesaler in Chicago. Was not Montie's Equipment, although he probably can get them. Sorry, do not have the name of company that springs were ordered. Hope all works out for you as well as it did for me.

Shannon, I could not tell the problem by using a pressure tester and turning the engine over. All my cylinders had 140-145psi, even my # 2 cylinder had 145#. I discovered the problem when I noticed the spring seemed loose around the valve. It just didn't have good tension on the valve. And as I mentioned before, on the intake stroke it was pulling the valve open and sucking in the exhaust. No fuel to fire the cylinder. Replaced spring. Instant fix. All 4 cylinders firing fine.

I BET THATS WHAT I HAVE... THANKS A TON!!!! YOU SAVED ME A TON OF HEADACHE! BECAUSE I KNEW WHAT I WAS DEALING BUT I JUST COULDNT FIGURE OUT WHY IT WONT FIRE.. SO THATS WHAT IM GOING TO DO CHECK THE SPRING TENSION AND HOPE IT LL FIX IT.. CUZ IT DOESNT EVEN SMOKE AND THE ENGINE IS IN TOP SHAPE BUT BAD SPRING I BET! JUST WONDERING WHERE DID YOU GET NEW VALVE SPRINGS? I MIGHT NEED SOME TOO... APPRICATE YOUR HELP! IT REALLY DOES SOUND LIKE WHAT I HAVE RIGHT NOW , CANT BE ANYTHING ELES. EVERYTHING WORKS REAL GOOD BUT NO FIRING..

Shannon, I had the same problem on my Massey. I tried EVERYYHING that I could think of from electrical to mechanical. Consulted with Big Dean. Still could not come up with an answer. No matter what I did, # 2 would not fire. It was exactly as you described. Took 6 months to figure out the one of the valve springs was weak, and when the piston went down on the intake stroke, it would suck the valve open and the cylinder would fill with exhaust fumes....and not fire. Best of Luck.

THAT SOUNDS REAL PRETTY MUCH LIKE YOU HAVE, BUT I STILL DONT UNDERSTAND , I PUT MY THUMB OVER THAT NUMBER 3 IT HAD ALOT OF PRESSURE. BLEW MY THUMB OUT , I COULDNT KEEP MY THUMB IN... BUT HOW CAN YOU TELL IF THE VALVE SPRINGS ARE GETTING BAD? PUSH IT DOWN WITH TAPPETS OFF? FEEL IT HOW STRONG IT IS? CAN YA GIVE ME A HINT HOW TO CHECK IT OUT? IM GOING TO TRY FIX IT WITHOUT TAKING IT APART IF I CAN....ITS REAL GOOD ENGINE BUT VERY SIMPLE LITTLE THING THAT CAN BE FIXED! I GREATLY APPRICATE YOUR FEEDBACK!! I LL BE CHECKING THAT ONE OUT LIKE YOU JUST SAID, CAN YOU TELL THAT ON PRESSURE TESTER? THANKS AGAIN

Did the compression feel the same as #3 on 1 and 2? If 1 and 2 feel like 4, maybe 3's got a stuck exhust valve.

Just a thought.

First of all are you sure that it is missing on #3 and not #4. because what you have told abought #4 is that that one dont have enuff comp to run. ofther wise i would check for spark on that cylinder. btw what brand of plugs did you put in?? if champion you might want to change them out. also try putting a plug from a different cylinder in there. hope this helps.

its brand new spark plugs expensive ones champion brand.. i havent checked 1 and 2 pistons to see whats the compression like ... number 3 is missing at all times but number four is firing just fine but the compression was pretty low , felt like around 30 or 40 psi when turning over.. no smoke at all when its running. that tractor that i brought from a guy , he probably couldnt figure out whats wrong so he sold it to me cheap... now i gotta to figure it out whats it, i dont wanna to tear it apart. im hoping its something very simple.. it starts right up but still number 3 is still missing, like when its running you pull the plug wire off and its running exactly and you try pull other plugs on 1, 2 , and 4 it runs rough... head gasket blown???? normally compression is like around 190 psi running ? that right??? thanks for helping out

I would first change them chamion spark plugs out with some cheap ones that you can get from the store or take one out of your other 44 and put that one on #3 i would say it is a bad plug. if not than check the dist for corosion on that tab. if you seem to think that the dist is at fault you can checK that for sure buy takeing off the dist off the other one. i will tell you this much it is missing because of one of two things. one would be not geting a hot enuff spark in the chamber. the second would be the fuel not geting there at the right time. i would inspect the points rotor dist cap wires and plugs very closely. a bad plug wire would make it miss too, like i say trade parts off the other 44. once you find the bad part it is cheap to replace it. i have had this same head ache with a farmall H. the last thing to check if all that fails would be to take off the valve cover and check valve clearence. a valve that is not set right will cause this too. but i would first make for sure that all the ignitions equipment is in good shape. have fun, and have a good day.

YEAH THATS WHAT IM GOING TO DO... TAKE MY GOOD ONES OFF MY OTHER MH 44 AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.. I JUST HOPE THATS THE PROBLEM.. I EVEN USED MY SPARK PLUGS OFF MY OTHER MH 44 AND CHECKED NUMBER 3 IT WAS FIRING GOOD... COULD BE BAD MAINFOLD OR WHAT ELES IT COULD BE SO I LL DO THAT FRIST THING THEN CHANGE MAINFOLD IF NOT THEN CHECK OUT VALVES... COULD BE ANYTHING THANKS AGAIN.. SHANNON

One more thing if you find that that valve on #4 is at fault of the low compression, regrind that valve. i think that if you get three to fire right and fours comp up you will have a good replacment motor if that is what you want to use it for. partsing out a runing motor might not be the best. if you have two that run and the one in the tractor has a bad brake down you have one to put in till you can fix the old one! something that i wish i have for my H's.

well i would not think that it would be the manifold, but you can check that when runing. spray wd40 or sopay water or what ever you would like and check for any bubles that would be being pulled in. i would not think that that is the problem as i have a bad manifold on mine too. if you that is good that you have good spark on #3. since you have good comprestion i would say that it should fire, but is the spark constant?
if you have constant spark my money would than be on a out of ajust valve. also i would check to see if #4 has bad valves, you said that the compresstion is low so i wonder if it could be that the valves on that one are not seating right. you can check this buy pooring oil down the spark plug hole on #4 and than crank it over with a compression gauge installed. if the compression increases than the rings are shot if no changes than the valves are not seating well on that cylinder. i can not think of any thin else that would cause that. you had asked abought a blowen head gasket before, no that would not be the problem. a blown head gasket on three would mean that three would have no compression. LIKE I SAID, I THINK NOW THAT YOU CAN CONFERM GOOD SPARK, MY MONEY IS ON THE VALVES. THE VALVES IF OUT OF AJUSTMENT CAN MAKE A TRACTOR RUN LIKE GARBAGE OR NOT AT ALL.

have a good one! STEVEN L H

THANKS FOR THE INFO , ITS GIVING ME GOOD IDEAS WHERE TO START... I BET IT COULD BE VALVES, ONE IS LOW PRESSURE, AND OTHER HAS REAL GOOD PRESSURE SO , I LL WORK ON THAT VALVE ADJUSTMENT AND HOPING I CAN GET ALL THEM WORKING RIGHT WITH PRESSURE TESTER... THANKS FOR ALL INFO!
