Recently my 255 was getting fuel into the crankcase. I replaced the lift pump but that didn't help. Big Dean said it was probably the seal in the injector pump. Went to a dealer and asked for a ball park figure just to replace the seal. He said $150.00 parts @ labor (2 hours). OK , I took the tractor in. When I went to pick it up,Iwas handed a bill for $550.00.
The had replaced the seal, but also adjusted the brakes, replaced oil filter, fuel filter, air filter($150.00) , changed anti-freeze, changed oil and tightened some nuts. All this without contacting me for approval even though I left my phone #. I had planned on doing these things myself. Anyway, I refused to pay for these unauthorized things. I paid for the seal replacement and fuel @ oil filter and left them holding the bag for $350.00. What would you have done?

You did the right thing and good on you for it!! It makes no difference wether it's your car, truck, or tractor. You go to the dealer and they're gonna get you. If I can't do the job myself, I find an independent garage and I tell them exactly what I want done. I also tell them to call me if they find anything that they think needs immediate attention. If they want repeat business, they stay with their estimate. I think most dealers could care about repeat business. They just want to be sure to sock you hard and get as much as they can on the first visit.

I also run a diesel repair shop and you were right to question the additional charges. Changing the oil and filter should have been in his estimate not just changed and the assumtion that you wuold pay for it. As far as an estimate for repairs the total cost should never be higher that 10% of the orginal estimate. Phone calls the the customer as cheap and can save everyone greif.

You were within your rights - but - hope you have another dealer near you. You can't use that place again as the relationship is not broken, it is burned to ashes.

You're probably right about the relationship burned to ashes. They won't want to see me again, and I won't be going back. The general manager was an arrogant S.O.B but the service manager was OK and he was the one I dealt with first and last. He was the one that gave the original estimate and crossed off the unauthorized charges after apologizing. I still don't know who gave the mechanic the go ahead. The work they did was OK but a bit pricey but I was mad when I got that bill. That's the reason I posted.

hi kypete. I see a couple sides to this deal.I run a shop and if I tell someone a $figure, I try to be on the underside when done. I do not understand the antifreeze r&r at all, unless you were getting fuel there also.I also don't understand how the job got bid w/out including the service job. How would they know if prob. is fixed w/out service? Also, they might have been worried about liability ie:your tractor spins a bearing on the way home from dlrship, you could prove negligence easy w/any fuel in the oil. Sounds like you had a good mech. if he adjusted brakes and found some nuts loose, etc. Bottom line is the job was mis-bid. It wouldn't have left my shop till I knew it was fixed and had adaquate lubrication. 'Course I would have bid it that way and saved a lot of grief on both sides of the fence. I think I'd have made them eat the P.M. labor at the very least and I know I'd have thrown a fit at $400 over the bid. P.S. I'm not defending the dealer here, just offering my 2 cents as to how this may have happened. Hoping your fuel leak is cured, Fred.

I would have done just that. they did that full well knowing that they were not authorized to do so. they did that to make a buck off you, sometimes it works other times they get pigheaded guys like you and me and we tell them were we think they should stick it. that is not fair to try to scam a guy ouut of money.

I have been in situations where they missed diagnosed and added parts that were not even close to the problem or just did much more than was on the agreed job. I usually approach the deal with an attidude that it is an unjust bill but I will get the good out of new parts and will pay for them but you shouldn't have put them on and you eat the labor or part of the bill. If they take advantage of the situation I try to make them compromise on the bill some how, but I do discuss it with the #1 man and settle with out closing the door for later business.

Unauthorized repairs, parts and labor, are a gift, whether well intended or opportunistic. If you are so happy with the charge of a "gift" cheerfully pay for it. If not, do not. As far as making a settlement that will not burn any bridges for the future business, why would anyone worry about next time, if this time involves unsatisfactory business practices?

I don't know what I would have done (or would have been able to do). That's a tough situation but I would say you did the right thing, no doubt about that. I'm surprised you got to leave with your tractor without a fight. Hard to believe these guys would do that but if you feel he did a good job, maybe offer him to pay for parts and his labor costs (not the shop rate) on all the other stuff you didn't ask for. That might be a bit of a compromise.
