Just recieved a Massey Harris Tractor and don't know model or year as of yet. This thing is a basket case. What I would like to know is which came first.... Massey Harris or Massey Ferguson? I know basically that they are the same company etc. but who's the forerunner? Thanks for the info. Regards

Look at the underside of the front casting (bath tub) just ahead of where it bolts to the transmission. There should be a date there. That will tell you when the tractor was built. As for the model, give us some details such as: number of cylinders, whether it is an overhead valve or L-head engine, number of forward gears, rear tire size and if the bath tub is cast iron or steel, and can narrow it down for you.

Massey Harris was first, then it was Massey Harris Ferguson for a short time I believe, then finally Massey Ferguson. I think the first change when Ferguson got in was about 1953 but the company still labelled tractors as Massey Harris till maybe '58 or so.

I have two Ponys with 1954 serial numbers on which the data plate shows Massey Harris Ferguson.
The older ones just say Massey Harris. Don't know which year change was made.
