I have a MF 65 which has a pedal behind the right side of the seat, behind the two brake pedals. It looks to be going to hydraulics. What is it used for?

Check to see it is not rusted up as this is a common problem with the diff lock on these tractors. Especially if you have only just discovered it. Don't engage at high revs and wheels spinning as you can break something. If wheels are slipping back off with the power a bit before engaging. The time I start seriously using a diff lock is when it is time to pack up and go home before I really get her stuck. My little baby Kubota has a pedal in the same place so it seems to be the standard place to put them.

other posts are right on, do not engage it while the tires are spinning.

Also, since you don't seem familiar with a diff lock, to disengage, hit one of the brake pedals (usually the left seems to work better for me). The diff lock pedal should pop up, and you are back to an open diff.

JD & IH were about 10 years behind on this one, I think it was the 30 series Deeres & 86 IH's before a diff lock was standard on them.

Steve, Thanks for the info on releasing the lock. I am familiar with and have used the lock several times, carefully and not while spinning, but I always release it by hand. Didn't know about the brakes releasing it. C. T.

I have a 165 and 285, and the 165 will disengage its self as soon as the tire are both spinning the same speed w/out a load on them, like when you are stuck or plowing. My 285, on the other hand, does not relaes and have to pry it up if I use it, which I haven't in a long time because of this exact reason.

this is differential lock which locks both wheels togeather this is ideal if the tractor is stuck in muck but remember to free it after as u can't turn the tractor with it on
