Can someone give me some info on the hydrolics of a TO 20. Does the PTO have to be engaged for the lift to operate? I have just recently gotten this old tractor to run, and do not know too much about it's operation. the hydroloic will pick up the 3-point hitch if the pto is engaged, but will not work otherwise. Also there is what looks like a cotter pin in the bottom of the transfer case near the drain plug. When I filled the transfer case it began to have a slow drip from the cotter pin. Please give me some advice as to what this means? Thank you.

All the information so far has been good but do not overlook the leak that you have. It may need to be addressed if it is too bad. From what you said I would guess that is is leaking from the front tranny seal. Make sure you keep a close eye on how much it is leaking and keep an eye on your oil levels. Just for future reference when buying tractors this is a good thing to check. If someone has plugged this hole you need to unplug it and see what is leaking. Or if it is free check the oil levels to make sure they are high enough. This often implies a transmission problem especially on the newer (1960s+) transmissions.

The pto has to be engaged for the hydralic pump to work. The pto has a cam on it that runs the pump. I just got through rebuilding my pump. If you ever have problems with yours e-mail me. I can give you some advice. I would also suggest that you loosen the small drain plug for the pump each year before winter to drain any water that accumulates from condensation over the summer. Don't remove it all the way, just enough to let the water out until fluid starts to come out. I learned the hard way. The cams on mine froze and busted last winter.

the ferguson tractors did not have live power so therefor you have to have the pto running this engages the hydralic pump

I owned a TO-20, 1951 model, and the pto had to be engaged in order for the hydraulic lift arms to function. With it not engaged, the lift wouldn't work. My father's TO-20 was a few years newer and worked the same as mine. Hope this helps.

Thank you again.

The cotter pin is there to allow oil that may leak from the engine rear seal or trany front seal to drain. The cotter pin is in the hole to make sure the hole doesn't clog, it vibrates keeping the hole clean. As for the hydraulics, I'm not familiar with the 20.
