Early Massey Ferguson information

On the opening page it is stated that Massey Ferguson first produced the MF35 in 1960 which maybe correct but this was not the first Massey Ferguson produced. My father told me that Harry Ferguson was building or may even designing tractors for Henry ford and built a Ford Ferguson well before 1960. Old Henry would not pay for the rights to use the inbuilt hydraulic lift so Harry went to England and build the Ferguson tractor. At some stage during this production he used petrol engines made by the Standaed Motor Co and later used Deisel engines by Perkins. These models were known as TE20, TEA20, TEF20 and TED?. At the end of this run was when he combined with Massey Harris.
The early TE series were a 20 horsepower unit with built in 3point linkage on hydraulic lift. They also had a rear only PTO that could operate relative to ground speed or engine speed.
They also were 1 of the first tractors with variable wheel track and by all accounts where amongst the hardest to tip over in their category.
I cannot verify any of the above info but feel that it would not be an impossible task.

Hi Tony,
You are basically correct in what you say with one major exception. The history of Harry Ferguson is very well documented and verified from his early work in designing a better plough for the fordson tractor that would not pull the tractor up at the front if it hit an obstacle, to his design and build of the ferguson black tractor, the first tractor with 3 point hitch for impliments, the production of the Ferguson Brown tractors with David Brown, the production of Ford tractors with Ferguson system, his famous lawsuit with Ford over infringments of patents, and his productuion of Ferguson tractors in England and in USA, which eventually led to the merger with massey harris and eventually the coming of Massey Ferguson.
You are praching to the converted here !

Tony, for the earlier models you would go to the H. Ferguson site, not the Massey Ferguson site.

Hi Hamish
I knew I was preaching to the converted but when the opening page did not mention anything earlier than the 35 I decided to put my 2 cents worth in. At least it has almost verified what my father told me but he must not have known about the Ferguson Black or David Brown link (not detrimental to either make).
The local Ford tractor (now owned by New Holland owned by [I think] Fiat) dealer has a Ford Ferguson on display beside a TE?20 and there is not much difference at first glance.
The little grey tractor did a lot of work with its own implements and I would back them against any tractor of equal hp made today. The biggest problem that they have down under is getting rear tyres because of the now odd size This is my 2nd time at this site so if I have squashed any toes my sincere apologies. Chev trucks and grey fergie tractors (in that order)are the two main needs on small farms in my opinion.
