Hello Massey-Harris fans! There may have already been a posting about this subject, and if there has, then would someone be so kind as to point me to the discussion. Otherwise, here goes: a 1950 Massey-Harris 44 RC has a substantial leak coming from the right side of the transmission case near the area where the brake actuating mechanism is. A pool of trans. oil collects after tractor is parked and then eventually quits. Do I need to remove the wheel in order to service whatever seal needs to be replaced? And is the seal a stocked NAPA or other auto-parts house item? Thanks much in advance, Randy Roop.

The seal is behind the brake drum. The shoes come off with the cover plate. Then there is a snap ring on the splined shaft that holds on the brake drum. You don't need to pull the wheel to work on the brakes. If one side is leaking the other side will soon. The seals are comon and available at napa or other parts stores.

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM YOU HAVE, I HAVE MH 44 1949 WITH HIGH ARCH WIDEFRONT , NO BRAKES AT ALL , GEAR OIL ALL OVER IT , HAD REALLY HARD TIME TO PULL ONE DRUM OUT CUZ IT WAS RUSTED PRETTY BAD, BROKE THE DRUM BUT GOT ANOTHER ONE AT SALVAGE YARD.. YOU SEE THE COVER WITH FEW BIG BOLTS , PULL THAT OUT AND PUSH THE OLD SEAL OUT AND CLEAN ALL THAT GEAR OIL OUT OF THERE.. I GOT THE NEW SEALS AT THE BEARING COMPANY , ONLY COSTED ME 18 BUCKS FOR BOTH.. THEN I PUT THE COVER BACK ON AND PUT ELECTRICAL BLACK TAPE AROUND THE SHAFT WHERE THE DRUMS GOES ON... THEN PUT GREASE ON IT AND SLIDE THE NEW SEALS RINGS ONTO IT AND TAP IT AROUND UNTIL IT COMPETELY FLUSH EVENLY WITH THE COVER THAT HOLDS THE SHAFT AND BEARINGS.. PUT EVERYTHING BACK ON , YOU CAN USE SILCONE SEALING AROUND THE SEAL RING IF YOU WANT TO, TO ENSURE IT WONT LEAK , THATS WHAT I DID , NO LEAK AT ALL WITH 15 GALLON OF GEAR OIL IN IT.. WORKS GREAT...GOOD LUCK!

Shannon,
Wanted to write you to say thanks for the GREAT advice. Yes, I know the plate you are talking about with the series of large bolts that holds it to the transmission case. There is a slot in the top of that plate from which all the oil is running out. Glad to hear that you were successful in stopping the leak. With 15 gallons of trans oil in there sounds like your technique did the trick. That is encouraging. I am quite sure that my brake shoes are just like yours were - saturated! There is almost no braking effect. I'll take the seals to the parts house to be matched up. If no success there, I'll try the bearing supplier in Portland. I'll let you know how it goes. Thank you again for the helpful information.
