My 1960 MF65 has a 4 cylinder diesel engine and ran fine last summer. This year it won't run and I have no experience with a diesel engine. It will start and run with a shot of starting fluid, but I hear you guys say NOT to use starting fluid. The guy I bought it from gave me an original manual, but it's for a GAS engine. Do any of you wiser and more experienced MF guys have any suggestions on what I can check or might do for this old diesel?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks to Big Dean in Shawnee for telling me how to bleed my lines and to Big Ed for confirming it was a fuel problem, to Joe for telling me what the controls were for, to Mike for the electrical advice!
We charged the battery up good and bled what appeared to be water and gunk from the two filters and air from the bleeder screws on the injector unit. We made sure the fuel line control was open and turned the key to the left for a few seconds and then to the right.

I never thought I'd be so happy to get a face full of black smoke! Thanks again everybody for all your help.

Hi Chuck

Did you push back the fuel shut-off control to
running position (under the dash left side)

Good Luck

Thanks Joe,
I think I know to what you are referring. We thought that was some sort of choke (remember, we're new to diesels) and were pulling on it but will make sure it is PUSHED in tonight. I need to get a manual for this machine.

Hi Chuck

There is no choke on diesel engines the (choke lookalike button)is the fuel shuttoff and is for stopping the engine "pulled" and must be "pushed back" to restart the engine next time.

If the tractor is still original..
and temperature is bellow 50F turn the starting
key to left you will feel spring return...
before starting the engine turn the key left side
for 15 second and then turn right to start.

When turning key to left 15 seconds if you ear
a little "poof" coming from the engine that means
that your electric/fuel air pre-heater is working

Good luck

My experience with diesels says that you're not cranking fast enough. Check the battery for a good charge, and if thats OK you may need to look into the glow plugs if equiped. Injectors can wear out too if it's a real high time engine.

you might want to check the heater plug on the air manafold, or else heat the tractor before starting.

If it starts on starter fluid and runs, then it is a fuel problem. Diesel is a dirty fuel and changing filters is a must. Microbs grow in the water that may have collected in the filters and can stop them up completely. That's big trouble if it gets to the injector pump. The other problem is air in the lines after changing filters. The lift pump will pump it but the tractor won't run until the lines have been purged. If it just shuts off with a key, then check for power at the solenoid on top of the injecter pump. No power means the solenoid is not opening. Hang in there with the diesels, but lose the starting fluid. It creates so much compression in the cylinder that it crushes the ring lands. Best regards Big Ed
