The Story

I recently inherited a circa 1990 MF 240 with the Perkins 3 cylinder diesel engine. It is equipped with the green/red idiot-type temperature gauge.

I've used this tractor twice - once with a 6' brush hog and once for some very light towing. Each time, the temperature gauge has indicated a "hot" engine condition. However, the engine does not actually seem to be hot and the second time I used the tractor the lower radiator hose was actually still cool - top hoses warm. I'm not much of a mechanic so I have several questions that I'm hoping to get some help with:
1) Anyone else had a similar problem?
2) Anyone have a schematic of the cooling system?
3) Is there a temperature regulator or thermostat in hte cooling system?
4) Has anyone replaced the red/green idiot gauge with a "real" gauge with actual degree scale? 5) Am I overlooking something obvious that I should check?
Thanks in advance, Johnny

I had the same problem on a 250...after many hours of troubleshooting and finding nothing wrong with the engines temp I broke down and ordered a new gauge...fixed problem, and when I took the old gauge out I saw the problem...between the electrical post hookups is a thin brass connector...it was cracked...hope this helps...

If the top hose is warm and bottom is cool/cold, it means one of several things. 1st, nothing is wrong , or 2nd, radiator core is plugged and coolant isn't flowing through very well, or at all. I would reccommend changing the temp sensor in the engine before you do anything drastic.
