First off, this is a gas burner with continental engine? If so, does it idle good, then when you open the throttle it runs wide open? This is a fairly commor problem. Take the front of the engine off so you can get at the cam gear. When you get to it, you will see a plate with a bunch of balls. If you can rotate the plate with the balls, the hub is broken. Unscrew the big cam nut and remove the plate. Check for backlash on the timing gers. This is what breaks the steel plate.About 25 years ago, I replaced the governor kit, the elderly man behind the parts counter wanted to sell me timing gears along with it. I didn't think I needed them. Exactly 200hours later I was back to get another kit. Still didn't want to buy the gears. He said,"Son, a lot of folks don't learn the first time, most do the second time, they all do the third time. I bought the gears and ended the problem.
