Just acquired a non-running 65. Can't quite get it to turn over fast enough to start. When tried to pull to start it free wheels. Beside the gear ship lever is a second shifter with "H S L" but it seems to have only two positions... neither will engage the gears...

There are 3 positions on the second shifter. "H"igh range, "S"tart which is neutral and "L"ow range. The shifter must be in "S" position to have the starter crank (there's a safty switch) unless it's been jumpered out.

If it free-wheels you may have a Multi-power tractor, these will not tow start.

free wheeling with both levers in gear you have a multi power tranny. some of the older 65 tractors require pre heating to start and a good battery. You might check sn. to see jf you have a early 1960s tr.if you use ether go easy with it you can do more damage htan good.
