Question about Ferguson TO35

If anyone can give me some information, I would appreciate it. I am considering purchasing a tractor that I believe to be a Ferguson TO35. It is from a dealer and is painted red with MF 35 decals. The plates on the front and instrument panel say Ferguson and TO35, serial number 141972. So, I figure it is a Ferguson and not a MF. I just need it to mow with and to be a dependable tractor. Is there much difference in current value, resale value, parts supply, dependability, etc.?? Was the dealer trying to gain something by painting it red with MF 35 decals, or was he just trying to use up old paint, etc? His asking price is $3500. Any info or tips that anybody could give me would be appreciated. Thanks.

If it is a "Deluxe" with two speed axle and live hydraulics with PTO that runs at ground speed or engine speed and is in good shape with good rear tires, it would be reasonable buy at that price in my area (VA). If it does not have the live hydraulics, it isn't much better than a TO30, which can be bought for less than $3K. Also, the Ford NAA which has live hydraualics sells for about $3500 here, so that tells you price. Parts are not a problem for any of the above.

Just my two cents worth, but if it does not have a live PTO or atleast a 2 stage clutch, I would not buy it for mowing at any price or condition. I know you can get overriding clutches, etc., but as I said, this is just my opinion :) Moye.

Steve - yours is a 1955 TO-35. Its original colors were gray and dark metallic green. Lots of older TO-35s were painted red/gray to make them appear "newer" and look like the MF 35s. Mechanically, there was little difference. The hydraulic components in the MF 35 were a bit more heavy duty than the TO-35. Parts are still available but sometimes you have to do a bit of searching. I recently restored a '55 TO-35 and was able to find every part (new or used ) that I wanted. As far as price goes. where I live in New Mexico $3500 is a reasonable price if the tires are average or above, the hydraulics work reasonably well, the engine works reasonably wel, and the tranny is in good working order. They are a good tractor-better than the Ford 8N in my opinion.I'd advise you to drive the tractor in all gears, have the dealer hook up an implement so you can lift it, etc. If brakes are bad, that is a fairly easy job to redo. Check the engine under load by pulling something heavy. If you get lots of white smoke, you have water getting into your engine. If it produces a lot of blue smoke, you have oil consumption. If it produces lots of black smoke, the carb may need tuning up, etc.

Good luck.
