I bought a Massey 65, and found the steering to be less than good. In checking out the possible problem, I find the fluid in the resoviour is light wt. hydroylic fluid. The book says it should have Type A automatic transmission fluid. Can some one tell me if it is safe to drain out as much of the old stuff as possible and re-fill with the "A". (some of the old will be left in the system) Help if you can Thanks,
Eddy

I heard that the tranny fluid can damage the o-rings, and that later on Massey put out a statement saying to use hydraulic fluid, but the shop still put in tranny fluid when the worked on it. I've always added hydrualic and had no problems. I'd first think the pump itself is bad, the fluid wouldn't have much to do with that part. My 165 has a new pump on it and works alright. Once had an o-ring in front blow out and lost all the fluid, ran the pump dry and recked it.

Yes i did the same thingpulled the pump off and tipped it upside down and then jacked the front end up and worked the steering back and forth to move the shaft in and outyou want to leaveit so the shaft is all the way in then put the pump and everything back together and fill several times until it is full do not run the motor with it empty just move your tires. you will have to run it after you fill it then work it back and forth until you get the air out.
