MF 165 Clutch problem diagnosis

I want a little help in diagnosing a problem. This is a 165 diesel, multipower. The problem is that the clutch no longer seems to disengage the pump for the 3pt. Previously, as you let up off the clutch, the 3 pt would engage and then the main transmission would engage. Now I can't engage the PTO with the clutch depressed without grinding of gears. There is a front end loader mounted on the tractor and one of the major supports is installed over the clutch inspection opening so it's a pain to take a quick look there.

Could this be something other than just a clutch adjustment problem. Linkage? Other issues?

Thanks

A few years ago I acquired a MF 165 with muti-power and a 2 stage clutch. The pto clutch would not release but the primary clutch worked fine. When I split the tractor and disassembled the clutch, I found that one of the ears was broken off from the secondary pressure plate. This is one possibility. There are probobly others.

It could be as simple as adjustment, however it could be a number of other things. Are the weep holes under the flywheel area free of debris? If so, is there any oil dripping? The same question from the hole at the rear area of the clutch bellhousing ( if there is one ). If oil has gotten onto your pto clutch, no end of adjustment will get it to work properly again. You will need to split the tractor & replace any oil affected friction plates as well as replace necessary oil seals to remedy the original cause of your problem ( oil leak ). For me, once you've split the tractor, your in there, you may as well do the input shaft seals & bearings, clutch release bearing, pilot bearing, friction plates ( as necessary ) and the engine rear main seal. Pointless doing only what appears to need doing only to find in six months that you need to split the unit again for one seal or bearing. I have a Dexta that didnt drip one drop of oil, but the clutches wouldnt work. When split, I found the hole where the oil should have dripped was blocked by fragments of friction plate & the oil had welled up & eventually been delivered onto the friction plates. One peice of advice in regards to the engine rear main seal, if it is the two piece rope type seal, soak it in engine ( clean ) oil for 24 hrs before installing it. I hope I'm wrong about your situation & all you really need is a clutch adjustment. If not, take heart, you'll learn more about your tractor whilst doing the repairs & be advised, use common sense & dont overly force anything. Make sure you have a relevant manual & you'd be hard pressed to go wrong. Anyone can pay a mechanic to do a job. The experience & understanding gained by doing the job yourself far outweighs the time taken to understand what your doing & the time it takes to do it. Having said this, if you really are "mechanically challenged"...always err on the side of caution & engage someone with the experience ( just make sure you watch over their shoulder so you dont miss out on gaining the experience ). Good luck, I wish you the best.

Thanks Paul. This weekend I removed the front end loader and the support brackets that were in the way to get to the clutch inspection opening. I did not have a problem with oil being retained in the housing area as the weep hole is open and the bracket over the inspection area has a large opening in it too. What I did find was that one of the three PTO clutch adjustments bolts was broken. Looks like I'll have to split the tractor to repair this. Big Dean emailed me privately and he agrees that no amount of adjustment will help me out until I get this fixed.

Thanks for your input on what else to examine while its apart. I don't know if I'll try to do it myself or get it done. I don't worry about my ability to repair it myself, but I do worry about my being able to get it done quickly. I need this tractor to be back in service quickly and I just don't seem to have the time.
