A few days ago I posted message about a tractor that was given to me. The tractor reportly had a blown head gasket. I decided to try to crank the tractor to make sure and to see if any thing esle might be wrong with it since it had set up for sometime. After being sure that the engine was free I installed a battery (out of my truck), turned the engine over a few times and to surprise it even tried to fire. The only problem was that my battery did have enough amps to spin the motor fast enough to crank. So my brother-n-law and I hooked to truck to pull crank it. The tractor fired up right away and ran smooth. We then checked all the guages and everything was fine. So I guess that I really got lucky hear on this one.

My questions today is does anyone know where I can find a tactometer and the rubber that fits the on the intake side of the air filter. Also, since this is my first diesel, could some please explain the air filter? It is a canister with a metal fiber and maybe some kind oil. Can this be cleaned or replaced?

Thanks guys. The info will help out and the web address. That is also a good idea for the paper filter to replace the rubber boot. We already checked for oil in the water and water in the oil and there is only a brief puff of black smoke when first cranked, which I have seen most diesels do.

Hi Sean: For your air filter, pull the metal mesh out of the canister, unroll it and wash it in paint thinner (household cleaning solvent, parrafin, white gasoline, different names for the same thing) roll it back up around something the same diameter as the inner tube in the air cleaner after letting get mostly dry, a little residual solvent won't hurt, and shove it back in the can all the way up, turning it at the same time so it gets in easier. Put the tube you rolled it around up against the inner tube when you re-install it so it will be easier to do. Then dump and fill the oil cup up to the line pressed on the cup with 30-weight oil, and your done. As for the inlet to the filter can, why not use a paper element filter that fits the inlet, then your oil and metal mesh will stay cleaner longer. Check the archives, someone has already done it, he got the filter at Jeg's catalogue.
