Well let me start out to tell ya what i got. the other day my father in law purchased a 59 mf35 for 2800 with 5 pc equipment (roto-tiller, box scrape, reg. scrape, bushhog, and lift all) one heck of a deal i believe, to be kept at my house till he wants to use it,i've got my own Farmall A but still its nice to have 2 to use when ya want to really go at it.

when we test drove it and went to pick it up it cranked and ran fine, well when we got it home i couldnt get it to crank, would turn over but no go, tried ether.. still no go(i've read thats not to good of a thing to do to one). could my problem just be the batteries are just not turning it over fast enough? or is there something that im missing.

The batteries seemed low so i pulled both of them and have them on charge at the moment.

also is fuel shut off in or out on the pull rod, i cant remember but i've tried both

i want to thank all you for your help and invaluable info.. i drained the filters and it looked like they had some water in them .. not much but a little and put some fresh diesel in her and after a while pulling my father in law on her with my A she sputtered back among the living. i probably drug her a half a mile or more b4 she started smoking pretty good and then she came to life not sure what we did but she's running all we care about.. now i'm gunna see what she does tommorow

HERE'S ONE I HAVEN'T SEEN MENTIONED TO OFTEN,BUT IT WILL CAUSE HEADACHES. THE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH HAS A WIRE ATTACHED TO IT THAT IF IT COMES LOOSE IT WILL NOT START.MAN I BOUGHT MY MF135 TOLD ME ABOUT THIS AND SURE ENOUGH IT CAME LOOSE. CRIMP THE TERMINAL ALITTLE AND IT SHOULD NEVER COME OFF AGAIN.YOU GOT A HECK OF A DEAL!

put the batteries back on her after trickle charging all night and hounded on the starter, still no luck, i got to looking and the glow plugs dont have any wires ran to them. only to where they ground out on the block near the injector pump.. any ideas as to why this would be?
im not sure if the tractor was warm when we test drove it. didn't cross my mind to feel the engine!

how would i go about in hooking back up the glow plugs..? i dont know too much about diesels but im sure this would make it start easier.

if i cant get it cranked by sat. im gunna pull start her with the my A and let her run a while

any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You could try to apply some heated air to the air pre-cleaner with for example a hair dryer while starting.

If there is air in the fuel system, it'll come out if you pull start the tractor. But you may have to pull it a long way. I had to pull my diesel Fordson almost half a mile.

This is probably to simple but the high low shifter need to be in neutral.

The fuel shut-off is out. Push it in to turn on. DO NOT USE ANYMORE EITHER!! If it doesn't start, there are several possibilties, and either aint gonna help. Could be low compression. Could be fuel just aint getting to the engine. Also, What are the outside temps? May just be too cold for it to really want to start. Big Dean may be able to help. Don't have his website, but he may post.

First of all, is it a Perkins or Standard Diesel? I don't know much about the Standard but if it's above freezing the Perkins should start. The fuel shutoff should be in to run. Check for water in the fuel. Loosen one of the fuel lines at the injector and crank, you should get fuel spraying out. Sounds like your not getting fuel. They're very particular about water or air in the lines.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

Charlie

PS: Avoid ether

The standard diesel engine is famous for the fact that it doesn't start in low temperatures when the engine is cold. Was the engine warm whem you test drived it? Maybe the seller had started and driven it warm before you came? You should try to pre-heat the engine before starting. DON'T USE ANY ETHER! It will only make the engine even more difficult to start.
