Being a Special, it's probably a weak valve spring
in the hydraulic manifold, beneath the dash. When
you read the Operator's Manual on these tractors,
they would last forever, if serviced, as listed.
Do you have the manual? Post again,if not with
the printed MH guide. Have to get into more detail
here. Good luck.

OK, i got into what i believe is the manifold. its the platform under the dash where the 2 hoses run into and out of. on the very top is a 5 or 6 inch long plate with a bolt at each end. under this plate is what appears to be 3 pistons or plungers. the one in the middle is stuck tight. my theory would be that this is somehow connected with the return line, and its not letting the fluid go back. i pulled of the entire platform to make it easier to work with, i will see if it will free up somehow. i dont have a manual, so this is guesswork. does it sound like im on the right track? thanks!

you may have a spool that is leaking by faster than the return port can drain it off this would back presser up and keep the cyl full of presser untell you shut the engine off put a gage in the return port and if it is high open up that spool and cheak it may just be so far out of ajustment the spool is not closing at all

DID YOU CHECK THE HYDRULIC OIL LEVEL IN THE RESERVOIR? LOOK FOR ANY HOSE IN "FOLDED UP" IF NOT... LOOK AT YOUR LEVER THAT IS ATTACHED ON THE HYDRULIC CLYINDER.. COULD BE STOPPED UP THERE ARE 4 BOLTS AND IT COMES APART EASILY... IF THEY LOOK GOOD MAYBE YOU MIGHT HAVE BLOWN RING IN THE CLYINDER WHERE THE SHAFT GOES OUT AND IN... CHECK THEM OUT IF NOT THEN IT COULD BE THE HYDRULIC PUMP ATTACTED ON THE ENGINE BLOCK.. THATS THE STEP I WOULD GO BY STEP BY... HOPE YOU FIND IT REAL QUICK AND EASY... NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY OLD MH 44
