Tractor had a 12 volt battery in it when I bought it but 6-v coil and generator. Of course the 12-v battery would never charge. I bought a brand new group 6-v battery and it won't turn the engine over. The engine either has a power-up kit or is from a 44 special because it has 4" pistons if that makes any difference. I'd like to get it back to all 6-v before I burn something up. Any help is appreciated. Mike

WHEN I BROUGHT MH 44 , IT HAD ORGINAL 6 VOLT SYSTEM I BROUGHT NORMAL 6 VOLT BATTERY, IT NEVER HAD ENOUGH POWER TO KEEP IT TURNED OVER UNTIL IT STARTS UP SO I CONVERTED INTO 12 VOLT SYSTEM WITH RESISTOR TO 12 VOLT STEP DOWN TO 6 VOLT ATTACHED TOWARDS TO THE COIL AND DISTURBOR ONLY , AND HAD 12 VOLT GENERATOR WHICH CAME FROM CHEVROLET 350... I THINK YOU MIGHT NEED A VERY BIG HEAVY DUTY 6 VOLT BATTERY WITH HIGH CRANKING AMP... ITS OKAY TO USE 12 VOLT BATTERY ON 6 VOLT STARTER BUT YOU CAN NOT LET IT KEEP TURNING OVER NO MORE THAN 6 SECONDS OTHERWISE YOU LL BURN UP THE STARTER... HOPE THIS HELPS ABIT! SO FAR IT TURNS RIGHT OVER AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM SO FAR....

it sounds like it might be a 12v starter or the cables from the battery to starter and ground are to light. the piston size will make no difference

You should probably pull the starter & check it out. If the bushings are worn so the armature is dragging, or other problems, a 12 may crank it where a 6 won't.
