MH-50 clutch problem...

My Massey Ferguson MH-50's clutch is acting up. I can't shift gears without grinding them. The freeplay in the clutch pedal has been checked, but the clutch is not clutching! Basically if I can shift it into (the lower) gear, it runs in the gear fine. But the only way to stop it is to shut 'er down and brakes. Is it time to split the chassis? I have an idea what may be wrong, but I wanted to see if anyone else out there has come across this and has an easy fix?

Thanks,

Daryl

Hi Daryl -

Don't know if the clutch on the MH 50 is the same as the 35 - 135 - 165, but we've had similar problems.

The usual problem - the pressure plate isn't being pulled back far enough to clear the clutch plate. Three situations from our experience: 1. Pin fell out of one of the three release levers on the cover, or broken release lever. 2. Loose/flaking lining on the disk. 3. Bent disk, apparently from a shock load.

We've had two other problems with the clutch not releasing, but these appeared immediately after reassembly. The first: warped rebuilt disks - about .030 runout (two separate occasions, different rebuilders), and the second - a real pain - the traction disk center had been bent forward on reassembly because the splines were not lined up, and the tractor partly pulled together with the bell housing bolts. The distortion was not obvious, and was just enough to let the hub touch the flywheel and drag. Took three splits to catch this one.

Thanks Jack! From what I understand the MF MH50 was the same as the MF35, just the sheet metal was different. I'll take another look tonight.
