Air pre-cleaners on a MF135

We have a Massey-Ferguson 135 Diesel tractor and our neighbour has one too. The only visible difference between them is the air pre-cleaner. Ours has a "mushroom" on top of the hood but our neighbours tractor doesn't have it. They are both early vintage, made probably in 1965 or -66. The mudguards are rounded (later they were flat on the top).

My question is when did the pre-cleaner appear on the hood? I've seen pictures of 135 tractors that had the flat fenders but still no pre-cleaner on hood. Or were these pictures of the gasoline models? Were there any differences in export models (diesel)? These two are located in Finland.

Also where I can find the serial number on a MF135?

All answers will be appreciated. Thanks.

TH , We have a 135 UK , built in coventry. It is ser. number 424343 = 1975 . It has the exact same air intake hood and stack as the picture. The exhaust goes down on ours. It has the Perkins engine. The fenders are the rounded clamshell type.. ray-s

TH, Hi, Funny one this, I don't think any Coventry built 135's had mushroom pre cleaners, Is it possible one was built in the U.K. and the other built in France or Germany? Do they both have the same type of engine? If they are U.K. spec. then they are definately early tractors as we had flat top fenders on 135's registered in 1966 but I don't know which month. What colour are the wheels? do they have red centres? Finally, the serial No. should be on a plate on the dashboard to the left of the steering-wheel centre. For information the 1st Coventry 135 was No 101 in 1965 with 1966 production being No. 30283 to 67596 hpoe this is of some use to you. Ali.

Thanks for the answer. I checked the serial number on our tractor and it is 7437 so it is indeed an early specimen. I don't think they made the 135 in France or Germany but I may be wrong. I'm pretty sure that ours and the neighbours tractor has the same kind of engine. The wheels are all grey and I think the paint is original (the tractor is not very worn, only 3834 hours on the meter).

I've included a picture of the pre-cleaner in this post. Does anyone know if they were installed on some of the export models?

Looks just like My '67 model except that it appears you have a key lock for the cover of the fuel & radiator cap access panel, where mine has a handle at both ends of the access panel. Lay on your back & shimmy under the front between the front wheels. Have a look on the casting in front of the sump. Doest it have a series of numbers? Anything look like a day, month & year cast number?. Let Me know i'd be intersted to know if the numbers are there. Paul :^{I)

Paul, there is not a key lock on the hood. The other handle is just missing. The picture is so bad that it can't be seen clearly. I crawled under the tractor and found some writing (in three rows):

11 12 64
37171790
3 DA 18051

The first row is obviously a date but what do the other numbers mean? I'm only 90% sure that the letters were "DA".

I also found out the serial number of our neighbours tractor. Believe it or not, it is 7462 while ours were 7437. They are so close to each other, what a coincidence. My dad bought our tractor just a few years ago and the neighbour has had the tractor since new. Could they have come out from the factory in the same day? Does anyone have any information about which month they started to make them etc.?

The fact that the serial numbers are so close together makes the original question even more confusing. Why does the other tractor has the pre-cleaner on the hood while the other doesn't?

TH Hi,If Massey produced 30,000 tractors in 1965 and assuming constant production, your two must have been made in March or April 1965.Does this agree with your documentation? I have a booklet which says that the 100 series "RED GIANTS" were launched at the 1964 Royal Smithfield Show which I think is usually in November or December, which would concur with 1965 production starting at No 101, but I still can't figure out how the mushroom cleaner comes to be. This is very interesting! also I can't work out why your tractors ddon't have red wheel centres, do any 100 series tractors in Finland have them?
Ali.

Ali, I don't know about the wheel centres on our tractor. The wheels could have been painted before. I can't say I remember looking at the wheel centres on other 100-series MF:s I've seen but I'd assume that they are painted all the same than in other countries.
