I have found a 135 with 3000hrs. on it. Is it about time to rebuild. Mint shape/tires/ no power steering asking $5000. Am I buying something that is ready basically to be rebuilt? Should I keep looking or deal with it. I have been looking for 9mos. and haven't seen anything better. Opinions please. Thanks.

Same sort of thing recently come up on the Kubota list. Motor life is good provided it is maintained. A crook air filter will drastically shorten the life of a motor. Tacho cables can break and different thing to cars there is no legal requirement to fix so hours are not always accurate. Check for fuming in the crank case, oil condition and general condition of tractor. Has it been kept in a barn or left to the weather? Buying a 30 year old second hand tractor is not an easy task but there are good ones out there.

Sounds great...I have a 175 that I am fixin' to retire....but it has 3 times as many hours, and I wouldn't think about touching the motor, besides cleaning it up. Purrs like a kitten and starts on the 1st or 2nd crank....even in the cold....if it ain't broke, don't break it, is my motto.... I'm looking at a nice 165($4500) and a 40($3200) and a 100% restored 175($7500), and even an import, right now, for a 2nd tractor to work with while I clean up this 175....but all I'm going to do is CLEAN and paint...ain't turning a bolt unless it needs fixing. That does not sound like a bad price for a good 135, Sure there are cheaper ones around, but you generally get what you pay for. If it is as clean as you say, and the no power steering is'nt a big issue with you, I would buy it. 3000 hours on a perkins that has had regular maintenence is nothing. I have a MF 240 with a perkins that has 10000 hours on it and runs the best.

That's probably a fair price around here. I've priced several for $6200, with about that many hours. I keep hearing about these great buys at $3500 to $4500, but I've looked and haven't found a 135 anywhere near that price. I have a 135 with 2500 hrs. From what I have read, a perkins diesel should go about 5000 hrs without needing a rebuild provided it has been properly maintained.
