Hi Guys,
Both rear tyres on my tractor are worn to an equal level however - one faces forward and the other is facing backward. I wasn't that bothered until my neighbour told me this was REALLY DANGEROUS. My property is mostly flat ground. Whats the general opinion of this? I can always get the tyre shop to change the direction of the tyre if that is what is recommended.
Thanks.

Hi Craig -

No danger on level ground. You do lose traction, wasted fuel when plowing, extra wear in differential, but this isn't a big deal.

Appearance - I like neat and balance too.

You can reverse the tread by turning the wheel outside to inside by removing the 6 bolts holding the rim to the center disk, unless the rim is welded to the disk. This will move the tire in or out 2 to 4"; you should be able to move the wheel on the other side to match.

I think you have a loader - it will be safest to keep the wheels as wide as possible if you go this route.

You may have to replace some of the special bolts if you do this, because they are rusted or siezed, but they are relatively cheap from a bareco dealer.

I coat the bolts and inside of the rim sockets with grease on reassembly to preserve them.

Personally I would change them if only so it looked better. Not much risk on flat ground but there may be more grip on one side that the other on slopes which would increase the risk of sliding. I wonder if there is any research on the difference in grip between forward and backwards?

You ever try pulling something backward vs. forwards? Backwards has a lot less traction than forwards. I would recommend turning it around for traction sake.

Come to think of it I probably haven't, at least not uder exactly equal conditions (i.e. no weight transfer). I did hear of guys reversing front tyres on four wheel drive tractors to help stop them sliding going downhill so I'm willing to agree with you I guess.
