I have slow or no operating hyd. when the tractor is cold in cold weather. The fluid on the dipstick for the hyd. is milky so I would say that it has water in it, but how did the water get in there and how do I keep it from happening to the new oil when I change it. What type of oil do I use in that tractor for the hyd. system it smells like 90W. Had same problem with a MF50 we change all the oil and it was good for about 6 months then back to milky. The shifter boots are ok. Do they make any types of additive for water in oil system? I think it a problem with that design of tractor. Where is the vent for that system?

I change my oil in the fall regardless. I have 2 oil changes with the same oil for 3 years on average. What I mean is I have 2, 10 gals barrels and I alternate them for about 3 years.

I drain my case then let that settle. I fill the case with the previous oil. I siphon off a barrel to about 1 1/2 inches from the bottom to leave out the sludge. I top up the case with new oil. My oil is clean and clear all the time.

You should change because of condensation buildup even if you have no leaks. 3 years is max for me but depends on usage.

Andy, if your fluid is milky, you need to change it soon as the water can settle around the hyd. pump, then freeze and cause a very expensive repair. Water can enter from the shifter boots, the master control spring boot or the filler port if it doesn,t have a gasket. The vent is a little pipe with a cap just below the seat on the right side of the tranny housing. I have seen them with the cap missing. As for the fluid there is a lot of debate on fluid types for older tractors, just don't use a detergent type as it will foam and cause a jerky lift. My 35 lift is slow in cold weather also even with no water in the system, the stuff is 80 weight so I expect it to be sluggish till its been stirred up some.
